At first, when I read this article, I thought "Wouldn't it have been great to get that?" My second thought was "Wouldn't it be better to be able to give that?"
I think I'd much rather give a $10k tip than recieve one.

To me, to be able to drop that much at once would mean that I was wealthy enough to do so.
Does that mean your motivation is the confirmation to yourself and others that you're wealthy?
No, no ulterior motives or pharisaic leanings here. I just think that it would be nice to have sufficient means to be generous towards others and not have to feel restrained by financial considerations.
Besides, I am not the sort of person that has to tell someone or show them just how good I think I am.

I was going to follow up with the question of what is the comparative worth of a gift given with an element of sacrifice versus a gift given through convenience, but that would be antagonistic.
